Zagreb

We had a really slow start today, well claire had a lie in, and I had a slow morning researching accomication and things to do in the next couple of weeks. Anyway once we cpruanlly got going we got the tram to opposite some of town (and as we were still not sure how th tram tickets worked, we managed to use e same ticket we bought last night since we hadn't validated it :/ oops)

We got the ram to Illica street and walked back towards the Illica square, whilst looking out for a pub/beer cellar that my dad had recommended! ...one hitch, he couldn't really remember the name or where exactly it as but he could walk me through how to find it. And so he did (by whatsapp and google street view of course!) haha the place was in Matica Hrvatskih Obrtnika and was originally part of the old technical college of the Zagreb University. Good beer and good food, and we tried a local delicacy prunes wrapped in bacon and cooked! Yummmm!!!

Then we shuffled to the gallery next door, to the gallery of illusions! This was really cool, with tricks of the eye and rooms that made one person look tine and the other gigantic! This was a bit of lighthearted silliness and a good way to escape the hot Croatian sun for an hour or so! And a wee break from all the history we've been drinking in in the last couple of weeks!

Then we walked around the Zagreb old town and followed our feet till we eventually reached the st marks cathedral...one of the high test points in Zagreb. Then we wandered down the Hill through the old town. The stone gate, the gallery of broken relationships (didn't go in past the gift shop) Then we when to the Gallery of Croatian Naive art. Beautiful! Very weird and brightly coloured, not an art movement that I'd ever heard of before.

Claire did some souvenir shopping and then we found s nice cafe to Have an ice cream and some coffee!!! :D (hardly anywhere does soya milk lattes here so I've struggled to get a good coffee for the past two weeks :( this place did not dissappoint!!)

We wandered some more and found a lovely park towards another beautiful cathedral. The architecture here is again a really interesting mix of gothic buildings that are falling apart, colourful art nouveau meets Georgian style...and some ugly new buildings.

We then had to find somewhere to eat but struggled to find somewhere cheap and nice and local...so we were forced to sit and have a glass of wine at a nice wine bar ;) we then looked at our wee "suggested eateries" map and found a few nice places to eat....we chose one of the closest places....it ended up at a vegan restaurant called Neeshka. I know what you're thinking ... but it was seriously amazing!! I had Gnocci Madrid from spinach and pine nuts and vegan pesto with some beetroot dressing on top! Claire had a LOOVELY smelling and tasting veggi Indian dish! Altogether a lovely meal!

Euro rail adventure!!! August/September 2016

Hello lovely people who decided to read our blog!!  Some of you may have followed the other travel blog that I do with my little sister Catriona...this one will be relatively the same but the writing will be shared with one of my best friends in the world, the lovely Claire (@Claireabella7 on Instagram if your interested). (Photo of us here) As we both graduated this July we decided to spend the remaining money that fourth year left us with (and some hard earned poker money form various jobs) on a special celebratory trip!! We had been talking about doing an interail trip for some time now ...but as usual either time, money or energy have been working against us... So since we finally had some  time  we thought "Hey! When else are we going to have anonymity chance to travel for a month without any disruptions or work commitments to rush back to!!" So here we are!!  Doing a big circular loop around Europe, starting in Amsterdam and finishing in Brussels, atte

Day 6: Berlin!!

Where we stayed   We were tired today! Alto ought we were relaxing out in the countryside with Kati we squeezed a lot in and we also did a fair bit of exercise too! So, a combination of that and the hostel dorm being too warm!! It was warmer in that room than it was outside!! A cold shower in the morning and at night helped us keep cool (and smelling relatively nice!).  What we explored We got the train into town and headed straight to the Brandenburg Gate where our walking tour was setting off from. There we met 'tall posh Rob' from Durham and he was our tour guide for the following three hours!! We learnt a lot about Berlin's history, some of which we already knew but a lot that was new to us and very interesting! We saw some of the key sites along the way too....another fantastic thing about these free walking tours! The Holocaust memorial Check point Charlie Hitlers bunker (not the actual thing as it was destroyed and is now noting more than a 'glorified' car p

Day 2 : A day in Amsterdam

Hello! We have lots to tell you about our day in Amsterdam, we tried the food, visited many places and learned a lot about the history of this liberal city.  Where we stayed: It had been suggested that we tried the lucky lake hostel, and it was certainly worth the pennies (perhaps one of the more expensive hostels we'll be staying in during this trip). The cheerful decor and helpful staff really made us feel at home, we're already dreaming of coming back some day. Our highlight was sitting in the hammocks holding a nice cold Amsterdam beer.  (Pictures to follow ) Places we explored: We managed to cover so much of Amsterdam in one day! The beauty of this place is that it's so easy to get around on foot (just watch for the cyclists, they will not  stop for you). As it was such a nice day we spent a lot of time visiting the outside attractions. We were lucky enough to stumble across a free walking tour, lead by a lovely guide called Karen.  (Pictures to follow ) Food we ate: W
