Day 4: Kaltenborg, Triathlons and mountains of German food!

Where we stayed:
So as we mentioned yesterday we are currently staying with Kati at her parents home in Kaltenborg. A BEAUTIFUL home and an even more beautiful family!! Willi, Johannas and Mama Petra (and of course Kati) could not have made us feel more at home! We were taken under their wing as one of their own. Our ouchie Dutch mossie bites were soon being treated and, as you saw last night, our bellies were filled with some of the best German food and German beer we could have asked for! Claire and I resided in the very top floor of their gorgeous wooden house, a house built by Kati's grandfather. The house was situated in the small village of Kaltenborg, situated in a green valley surrounded by hills and trees and miles of green!  In the evenings while we ate our bbq meals we looked out to an clear sky and the silence reminded us very much of our homes on the wee isle of Lewis!

Food we ate:
Each morning our new German mama prepared a massive German breakfast spread! Fresh eggs and home grown veggies from the back garden, about seven different types of breads and hams and cheese, a selection of jams and spreads...the list continue but I think that this photo about covers it! Jummy jummy!! ;)

Petra had made us lunch before shed left for work that morning so when we return ended from our morning hike up the local hill Hohe Acht we stuffed our wee faces with a pasta and cheesy meat lunch on the sunny patio, with a cool beer and lemonade. (I know it sounds like sacrilege but th Germans do know and lobe their beer, and this Bitburger stuff was good!!) Then by dinner time we had world up quite an appetite, I'll explain below, so we has another grilled dinner on the BBQ, thus time yummy hamburgers and ALL the toppings you could possibly think of!! I don't know what she thought about Scottish lassies before this but apparently our appetites was less than she expected, and anyone who knows claire and I KNOWS how much we eat!! Haha

Places we explored:

As I mentioned before we pretty much did a whole triathlon today! A walk, some peddling and a swim!
We went for an earlyish hike in the morning up alocal hill called Hohe Acht. It's an old volcano and highest point in Kaltenborn, so the view at the top was a spectacular 360 of the entire area which stretched for miles!!  We could even just make out koln on the horizon. We chilled st the top of the tower and drank a wee can of beer. We hiked for about an two hours and we were glad to gobble up the lunch that Petra had prepared for us when we got back!

After lunch we headed to Laach Marie. Kati hired us a little paddle boat for a half hour work out on the legs, but of course we spent part of that sunbathing! A very peaceful, chilled out half hour that was over far too quickly!! (Some photos and video to follow!) and since it was about 4:30 it was VERY warm, and when Kati suggested that we go an meet some of her pals at an outdoor pool we were very keen!!

Schwimming!! We went to the biggest, best and busiest outdoor pool to cool down, and boy did we need it. We swam, we chilled in the sun, swam some more and then headed home for so,e more delicious food grilled up by willi!

Day 6: Berlin!!

Where we stayed   We were tired today! Alto ought we were relaxing out in the countryside with Kati we squeezed a lot in and we also did a fair bit of exercise too! So, a combination of that and the hostel dorm being too warm!! It was warmer in that room than it was outside!! A cold shower in the morning and at night helped us keep cool (and smelling relatively nice!).  What we explored We got the train into town and headed straight to the Brandenburg Gate where our walking tour was setting off from. There we met 'tall posh Rob' from Durham and he was our tour guide for the following three hours!! We learnt a lot about Berlin's history, some of which we already knew but a lot that was new to us and very interesting! We saw some of the key sites along the way too....another fantastic thing about these free walking tours! The Holocaust memorial Check point Charlie Hitlers bunker (not the actual thing as it was destroyed and is now noting more than a 'glorified' car p...

Varese: convertible car rides and Italian lakes

Well. Had a VERY relaxed and amazing sleep in David's gorgeous colourful apartment last night! We didn't even set an alarm today we simply woke up when we were ready. Unfortunately the SEVRAL churches in Davies neighbourhood had other ideas. I was woken at 6 first then again at 8 so I just got up. It was a lovely view from the front balcony and you and from the back veranda you could see the hills of Switzerland.         Once everyone else had risen we had a coffee on the balcony and headed off in David's convertible car towards two lakes in the area,  Lake Lago d'orta and Lake Maggiore. We first hea ded to  Lago d'orta, perched at the bottom of a deep valley we waked down a very steep hill from the car park th the village and the lake. The village was quite typical of a lake village in Italy; steep pebbled streets, colourful houses that are slightly falling apart, altogether a very beautiful and idyllic setting to have lunch.  (Photos to follow) ...
