Florence and on to Varese

We were a little sad to check out of our nice accomodation in Florence today, however we were quite excited to leave the masses of crowds of tourists behind and head to Varese in the evening to see my friend David.

However we had a whole day left of exploring the compact city of Florence before we got to escape to a much smaller town in the Italian countryside.

After leaving out heavy backpacks at the left luggage again, we headed in search of a coffee and a brioche, and then headed off to find the meeting point for our free walking tour of Florence. Although we had been wandering around the tightly compact city yesterday we felt we needed some more backside info on a lot of what we'd seen. It has also been a wee while since we've followed a guide ant not just done our own thing, so the prospect of following and listening without much thinking or struggling with maps was quite welcoming.

This tour however, despite being the only free walking tour in the city was by far the lowest quality that we've been on so far in this trip. I'm not sure if I was the sheer number of people on the tour or the guides poor quality mic/speaker, or the constant LOUD bustle of this city, but claire and I were in agreement that we could barely hear or make out the majority of what he was saying. This was a shame because the small bits we did hear explaining the Renesance history of the city and its key protagonists through the years was actually very interesting. It wasn't hard to picture this city without so many people and appreciate its beauty, and back in time about 200+ years and you can just imagine how grand this city was! We did find it very difficult to escape the crowds in this city though and like I said we were very much looking forward to getting out the city for a bit.

By lunch time we were really ready for the delicious seafood pasta we ordered at another local restaurant. I had one with calamari fan claire had one with baked octopus! The joys of traveling with someone with similar tastes to yourself? Sharing of course!! We eventually meandered our way back to the train and FINALLY headed to Milan, and then north about an hour to the town of Varese.

My friend David, who has a house in Varese and who we were going to be staying with for the next couple of nights, met us form the station. His friend from work Heather is also visiting Varese this weekend and so (after claire and I had a quick shower) we headed out to the local pizzeria La Paranza. It was a great laugh chilling out with these guys, drinking beer, eating some of the best pizza I've ever had and checking out the "hot Italian waiters". I know a few folk who would be VERY envious, of one or all of the above 😜!

Goodnight for now

12 hours in VENICE: pizza, ice-cream, coffee ...and elasticated waistbands!

WE'VE REACHED ITALY!!! Yippeeeeee!! I think Claire and I have been looking forward to this leg of the journey since we started off!! Th e land of pizza and pasta and cannoli and biscotti and COFFEE!! We have checked off at least three of that in our first day here as we've been exploring the beautiful Venezia!  We were originally hoping to have a few days here in Venice, or at least two, but unfortunately our wee pockets couldn't fulfil that...we arrived to the tail end of the Venetian Film Festival and so the price of accommodation, which is usually in the top end of our budget, was skyrocketed! Therefore with the the flexibility that the interail pass gives you, a wee change of plan, we spent the day in Venice and in the evening we headed to Florence for a couple of nights.  But first I'll tell you about Venice.  Arriving early off the overnight train (which claire may have mentioned was a LOT more comfortable that the first one we did) we got started in Venice shortl...

Zagreb and the not so orient express.

Not going to lie, this was not the most productive day we've had so far. We had the majority of the day to spend in Zagreb before we needed to board our first night train of the trip. However, we couldn't do anything with our big heavy rucksacks so we had to lug them about wherever we went. To be fair we did do a lot of walking the previous day, so we felt quite content with exploring the areas closer to the train station.  So, first of all we walked up to the grand hotel that used to serve as a rest stop for travellers of the great Orient Express. We considered having a wee coffee just to experience a small slice of what it might have been like to live such an affluent life (the hotel has been visited by the likes of Queen Elizabeth...). I would love to say that we did... But we gazed at the fancy waiters in their fancy suits and then took a look at ourselves and settled upon having our pack lunch in the gardens with a view of the hotel instead. We we haven't had a great e...

Euro rail adventure!!! August/September 2016

Hello lovely people who decided to read our blog!!  Some of you may have followed the other travel blog that I do with my little sister Catriona...this one will be relatively the same but the writing will be shared with one of my best friends in the world, the lovely Claire (@Claireabella7 on Instagram if your interested). (Photo of us here) As we both graduated this July we decided to spend the remaining money that fourth year left us with (and some hard earned poker money form various jobs) on a special celebratory trip!! We had been talking about doing an interail trip for some time now ...but as usual either time, money or energy have been working against us... So since we finally had some  time  we thought "Hey! When else are we going to have anonymity chance to travel for a month without any disruptions or work commitments to rush back to!!" So here we are!!  Doing a big circular loop around Europe, starting in Amsterdam and fin...
