Zagreb

We had a really slow start today, well claire had a lie in, and I had a slow morning researching accomication and things to do in the next couple of weeks. Anyway once we cpruanlly got going we got the tram to opposite some of town (and as we were still not sure how th tram tickets worked, we managed to use e same ticket we bought last night since we hadn't validated it :/ oops)

We got the ram to Illica street and walked back towards the Illica square, whilst looking out for a pub/beer cellar that my dad had recommended! ...one hitch, he couldn't really remember the name or where exactly it as but he could walk me through how to find it. And so he did (by whatsapp and google street view of course!) haha the place was in Matica Hrvatskih Obrtnika and was originally part of the old technical college of the Zagreb University. Good beer and good food, and we tried a local delicacy prunes wrapped in bacon and cooked! Yummmm!!!

Then we shuffled to the gallery next door, to the gallery of illusions! This was really cool, with tricks of the eye and rooms that made one person look tine and the other gigantic! This was a bit of lighthearted silliness and a good way to escape the hot Croatian sun for an hour or so! And a wee break from all the history we've been drinking in in the last couple of weeks!

Then we walked around the Zagreb old town and followed our feet till we eventually reached the st marks cathedral...one of the high test points in Zagreb. Then we wandered down the Hill through the old town. The stone gate, the gallery of broken relationships (didn't go in past the gift shop) Then we when to the Gallery of Croatian Naive art. Beautiful! Very weird and brightly coloured, not an art movement that I'd ever heard of before.

Claire did some souvenir shopping and then we found s nice cafe to Have an ice cream and some coffee!!! :D (hardly anywhere does soya milk lattes here so I've struggled to get a good coffee for the past two weeks :( this place did not dissappoint!!)

We wandered some more and found a lovely park towards another beautiful cathedral. The architecture here is again a really interesting mix of gothic buildings that are falling apart, colourful art nouveau meets Georgian style...and some ugly new buildings.

We then had to find somewhere to eat but struggled to find somewhere cheap and nice and local...so we were forced to sit and have a glass of wine at a nice wine bar ;) we then looked at our wee "suggested eateries" map and found a few nice places to eat....we chose one of the closest places....it ended up at a vegan restaurant called Neeshka. I know what you're thinking ... but it was seriously amazing!! I had Gnocci Madrid from spinach and pine nuts and vegan pesto with some beetroot dressing on top! Claire had a LOOVELY smelling and tasting veggi Indian dish! Altogether a lovely meal!

Day 9: Prague to Budapest

Day 9: Prague to Budapest We managed to wake up relatively early today and were packed and fed by 9 o'clock. We then chilled in the lovely Advantage hostel lounge for a couple of hours and used their free Internet to plan our route a bit more and to book some further accommodation. Last night we also confirmed dates with the two friends that we'll be staying with. We are a very excited to see  Zoe in Switzerland and David in Italy and explore their beautiful countries with a couple of locals!  But for now, goodbye Czech Repubic, we are heading to Hungary!!  After we checked out of the hostel we had a wonderful stroll through a local park (Riegrovysady) as we headed to the train station. We grabbed some food for the train and had lunch at a European classic ;)  (Last nights dinner was a bit expensive so today we're allowed to  be cheapskates!!!)        After fighting with a cash machine at the train station trying to figure out this new money ...

Day 7: Berlin to Prague

Day 7: Berlin to Prague We had time to play about with in the morning before we left Berlin so we walked to the German parliament building not far from the train station. This building is quite something else, it's defining feature is the glass dome on top in which the public are invited to walk about inside. There you get a nice view over the city but also a view down into the debating chambers of parliament, this is to convey the transparency of the government and also a way of reminding members who they work for, all they have to do it look up and see the people of Germany (or the tourists of Germany) to know that they are there to serve those people. Unfortunately we didn't get to go in, you need to book in advance or wait in a long queue on the day and our train would not wait for us! But I can assure you it's worth it based off a distant memory of going up it when I was on a school trip.    So then the majority of the day was spent travelling to Prague, we reserved ou...

12 hours in VENICE: pizza, ice-cream, coffee ...and elasticated waistbands!

WE'VE REACHED ITALY!!! Yippeeeeee!! I think Claire and I have been looking forward to this leg of the journey since we started off!! Th e land of pizza and pasta and cannoli and biscotti and COFFEE!! We have checked off at least three of that in our first day here as we've been exploring the beautiful Venezia!  We were originally hoping to have a few days here in Venice, or at least two, but unfortunately our wee pockets couldn't fulfil that...we arrived to the tail end of the Venetian Film Festival and so the price of accommodation, which is usually in the top end of our budget, was skyrocketed! Therefore with the the flexibility that the interail pass gives you, a wee change of plan, we spent the day in Venice and in the evening we headed to Florence for a couple of nights.  But first I'll tell you about Venice.  Arriving early off the overnight train (which claire may have mentioned was a LOT more comfortable that the first one we did) we got started in Venice shortl...
